I was amazed to find a car at Pebble Beach carrying the first number plate to be issued in Australia. It was on a huge 1928 Daimler which been first delivered to a customer in Sydney. This plate has a somewhat mythical status here so I got a kick out of seeing it. The owner of the Daimler was keen to talk about the car's history when I told him I was from Sydney. The number 6 plate I saw on the AMG C63 in a car park today. It would be worth a lot more then the car itself.

Ahhhh Now I get it. I knew these plates had stratospheric values, but I hadn' t clued in to the fact that the are numbered based on when they were issued. The first ever license plate issued in Australia!!!! So does that mean it was likely issued well before 1928? Any idea what it would be worth today?

Victoria have numbers from 1 upwards also. Number's 1 - 6 were all first issues to the government, the first public issue plate in VIC was Number 7, this would have been in the 20's also.

I've done some online digging but I couldn't find out when NSW 1 was issued. It did belong to Sir Frederick Harold Stewart, who was a Member of Parliament. So maybe the first few plates were also govt issue here in New South Wales. His family still owns plate 1 now though. The plates here were issued numerically, from 1 to 999999. Then they started alpha numeric with AAA-000, AAA-001 etc. I have seen AAA-000 on a car but couldn't get a pic. At a recent auction, numeral only plate 104 sold for AUD$167,000. Plate 11666 sold for AUD$26,000, $4000 more than it changed hands for at auction 5 months ago. Recession? What recession??

Similar in VIC, however release of 6 numbers went up to 299999. All numbers below that are worth big $. You can buy 300000 to 999999 from Vic Roads for about $700. Most good looking numbers are gone though.
