Proton something-or-other - 1

Album details

City: Sydney Australia
Event: Street capture
When I saw this parked today I had no idea what it was, but I knew that it was something detestable. I had to look at the registration label to find out that it was a Proton. So I was right! How could this company possibly be associated with Lotus?

Lotus acquired Proton Automotive in 2003.

Oh dear... The interior looks like someone described the inside of a new Fiat 500 down the phone. I don't know where else it was sold but we had something called a Proton Satria GTi here in England, the first car Lotus was involved with. By all accounts it was a cracking little thing, and it had riveted-on arch extensions à la Porsche 993 GT2. Everything else they've ever done has been utter rubbish, mind. This sort of looks like it was based on an early 90s Vauxhall Astra 5 door, the one that became a Daewoo.

Yeah, the Satria GTi was sold here too, and from all reports it was a Good Thing. But as you say the rest of the range made an Austin A40 look positively advanced. We did miss out on the Perodua, however, which is disappiointing.

As nauseating as this is, it does make me wonder : What happened to two-tone cars?

Good question. Those two-tone Rolls Royces of the 50s and 60s were just gorgeous. This abomination is apparently a 'Gen-2'. Makes you wonder what the hell the Gen-1 was like!

1955 Chevy Bel Air. Magic. The Veyron is the only current car that comes immediately to mind that's available as a two-tone. But I'm sure that there are others.

These THINGS are built in Malaysia (Guess who owns Lotus? Clue ...its not English any more) and are very poor GM/Daiwoo copies. Australia has a Free Trade Agreement with Malaysia so these things come in duty free while Australian cars sold in Malaysia ONLY have a 140% duty added! The 2 tone paint is not original. I'm surprised it rates on this site as it is about exciting as bill from the tax office.

Quite right. It has a decal on it from Autosalon which is one of those doof-doof-WRXs-with-28-inch-chromies-which-look-like-every-other-car-on-display shows. It must have won the Proton category. Your tax office reference reminds me of a 'Blackadder' line : "That would would be like being shot in the neck with an arrow, and then finding that there's a gas bill attached to it." Anyway back to the delightful Proton, I guess someone loves it. Which is a disturbing thought.

I saw a standard one of these the other day. Evidently it's called a 'Persona.' Whatever it is, it's still an emetic on wheels.
