Studebaker built some incredible looking cars, particularly considering that they were just run-of-the-mill consumer cars, not concept cars, one-offs or show cars. Imagine the impact this third generation Champion must have made when it was introduced in 1946. This and many other Studebakers were designed by the amazing Virgil Exner (Google him), one of the most influential & innovative industrial designers of all time. He designed an incredible variety of products, from refrigerators to locomotives. From what I can find online, this car came with a 169.6 cubic inch six cylinder engine connected to a three speed manual transmission on the steering column. I found this one parked in the street in Sydney. It's registered in Queensland, which is the state north of here. The border is 1000k's from Sydney, and the northern tip of Queensland is about 2300k's from the border. So this car has come a long way. Speaks well of old US cars. The sun could hardly have been in a more difficult position when I tried to take these shots on the iPhone.
