White HSV R8 Maloo

If you don't live in Australia, you've probably never heard of this car. Down here we don't have the F-350 class of monster trucks, we have these instead. It's the ute version of the Holden Commodore, which some markets know as the Pontiac G8. There's also a corresponding Ford, based on the Falcon. HSV - Holden Special Vehicles - makes the big mutha version of the more mundane Commodores. This is the ute version. It runs a 6.2 litre V8 giving 317 kw. Hence the 317 badge on the tailgate. 550 Nm of torque sounds good too. I love it! For...

Holden VL Commodore SS Group A SV

Seeing oliver_sudden's Holden HSV GTS 307 reminded me of the occassional Holden VL Commodore SS Group A SV (or 'Walkinshaw') that I spot in Fremantle. The 750 Walkinshaws made from 1988-1989 were significant not only for their victories in Group A Touring Car racing, but also for their radical styling (carried out by Peter Stevens of McLaren F1 fame) and HSV replacing a long and respected tradition of Brock Commodores. The owner of this mint example indicated that he had beefed both the diff and engine.

Holden HSV GTS 307

This rather wicked GTS 307 was in the car park at Eastern Creek racetrack yesterday. HSV is the performance arm of Holden, which is the Australian arm of General Motors. The Pontiac G8 as sold in the US is derived from the Holden Commodore. HSV gets hold of them and in go the 'roids. 307 kilowatts (413 hp), 20 inch wheels, 6 speed manual or 6 speed auto, ABS, EBD, EBA (electronic brake assist), Magnetic Ride Control suspension, uprated interior etc etc etc. The extra appendage sitting on the bonnet (hood) of this one is not standard.

Saw this HDT Torana GTR XU-1 Race Replica at the All Australian Car Day VI. It is one car that proves the exception when it comes to the belief that Australian cars have "too much engine and not enough car." In 1972, the XU-1 beat the Ford Falcon at Bathurst with a combination of better brakes, nimble handling & new talent in the form of Peter Brock.

Holden SV6 ute

Back in the '30s (I think), an Aussie farmer wrote to Ford Australia asking for a vehicle in which he could carry the sheep, pigs and hay during the week, and then take the family to church on Sunday. A designer at Ford went to work, and came up with the Utility. It probably didn't take long for it to become known as the ute. Since then the Ford and Holden utes have been the mainstay of the farmer. Tough, simple, comfortable...just the ticket! In recent years the focus has changed somewhat, to the point where the Holden ute is now...

Holden Coupe 4

Australia's Holden Monaro was sold in the US as the Pontiac GTO. Here in Australia, this four wheel drive version was also available. The 4WD platform was a few inches wider than the 2WD platform, so the guard (fender) flares were required. Due to the 5.7 litre LS1 engine not being as powerful as the rest of the Holden Special Vehicles range, and the fact that only a 4 speed auto was available, it was not a big seller. A large price premium didn't help either.

Holden Coupe 60 Concept

This is the Holden Coupe 60. It's a concept car built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Holden, GM's Australian subsidiary. It's not intended for production, but that's what they said about the Monaro, which went on to become the Pontiac GTO. The paintwork is spectacular. It looks like liquid metal, about to slide off the bodywork. Amazing. It runs 20 inch centre lock wheels. The engine is a 6 litre flexfuel V8 (estimated at 300 kW) capable of running on up to 85% ethanol and can even run on four cylinders during light throttle applications or cruising due to the...

Holden HSV Maloo

These are some shots of a Australian-only vehicle called an HSV Maloo. It's based on the Holden Commodore utility (known here as the ute), which I believe is to be sold in N. America as a Pontiac G8. HSV is Holden's Special Vehicle division which does hotted-up versions of the production cars and utes. It runs a 6 litre LS2 with 307 kw. Should be enough, though it's a bit heavy at 1800 kilos. These are very popular here, despite the petrol prices. Ford has equivalent offerings too. HSV is soon to release a thing called the HSV...
