I should have taken more photos of this, it's not as if they pop up at every intersection. Anyway, the Giocattolo was another example of the Aussie way of building cars : "too much engine and not enough car." See also Elfin & Bolwell on madwhips. Giocattolos were built in Queensland (an Australian state) in the mid eighties. The Giocattolo had the 5 litre V8 from Holden (General Motors) stuffed in behind the front seats. A mid-engined V8 supercar. This gave the car slightly less performance than the contemporary 911 Turbo. The guard flares were kevlar, and kevlar was used liberally in the car, which helped to keep the weight down to 1085 kilos. Only 15 were built, Alfa's decision to stop production of the Sud Sprint meant the end of the Giocattolo. More details and photos at http://alfasud.alfisti.net/gioe.html  By the way, Giocattolo meams 'toy' in Italian. I haven't seen a Giocattolo since this one, and come to thnk of it I haven't seen a Sud Sprint for years either.

Wow. That is awesome. When I was a kid I would freak out every time I saw an Alfasud Sprint. They weren't very common in Kenya. This thing is so awesome. I love when they take a front-engine front-wheel-drive car and make a mid-engine rear-wheel-drive out of it, e.g. Shogun. I also have a thing for 5.0L V8s. This is one rare car - only 15 built. Still looks like a beautiful car to me.

These things are damn dangerous. Todd Wilkes lost his life in 1 @ Eastern Creek when his rear brakes faded & Adam Caplin crashed in 1 in Adelaide with a steering malfunction...

Yeah, but Wilkes was drag racing in the wrong direction (I know it was approved. That was a big mistake.) towards the wall which was at the rear of the start line when drags used to be held at Eastern Ck. If he'd been racing in the conventional direction the accident wouldn't have happened.
