A few days ago I was driving through one of Sydney's northern beaches suburbs, when an R8 came towards me, quite slowly. I figured he was looking for something and might pull over soon. Photo opportunity! I turned around and followed the car. Sure enough, I soon found it stopped, so I pulled up behind it and took some photos through the windscreen. He took off again, so naturally I followed, firing off shots as I drove. After a couple of kilometers, he stopped. I got out of my car and went to introduce myself, to avoid a possible confrontation. Turns out he was Bill Buckle, one of Sydney's largest car dealers. Well, until he sold his dealerships last year. Talk about good timing. He had Audi, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen. The dealerships had been family-owned since 1926. Anyway, turns out he knew people that I used to know when I worked at Sydney's Volvo, Porsche & Ferrari dealer back in the '70's. He was very generous with his time, and was very enthusiastic about the R8. He decided against a 997, because he said "Porsche still has its engine in the wrong place." He did say it was OK for me to open the door to shoot the interior, but he didn't suggest that I try it on for size, so I didn't ask. At one point in the conversation, he pointed across the water and said "See that blue and white catamaran? That's mine too!" When he eventually drove off, he headed up his driveway through the automatic gates and up to his resort-style waterside mansion. Bill is now is his 80's, great to see someone that age still getting a kick out of life. All in all, a happy and unexpected meeting.
