Dino 308GT4 - 1

Album details

Capture Date: Mar. 14, 2010
City: Sydney Australia
Event: Italian Fiesta
For all the pedants out there, this is not a Ferrari. Not exactly. Like the 206 & 246 Dinos, these initially didn't wear a Ferrari badge and were marketed as a separate product line, in honour of Enzo's son. I worked as a salesbloke at what was then Sydney's only Ferrari dealer when these and the 246s were new. The contemporary 365s were badged as Ferraris, being V12s, but the V6 & V8 models weren't. So if you see one with a Ferrari badge on it, feel free to go up & correct him. I'm sure he'll enjoy your input. From May 1976 however, they did wear Ferrari badges, so check the year of manufacture first. I always liked the 308GT4, it's one of the very few non-Pininfarina designs, being a Bertone body. One of these is wearing locally-made Simmons wheels, I think they suit the car. These were at the Italian Fiesta at Sydney's Olympic Park. More iPhone pics.

Love how that Koenig looks in the first pic!

Yeah, the Koenig was wedged in there so I couldn't get any profile shots. But it pops up regularly at car shows and so on. I'll see it again.

Ah, the old Ferrari/Dino argument! They do look good these days don't they, whatever the badge says. That said, if I was poor old Alfredino, and my dad was THE Enzo Ferrari, I'd like to have been remembered by something with a 'Cavallino Rampante' on the nose from the start! I think I'm right in saying Dino designed, or helped design, the V6 for these cars.

You are indeed correct. Dino did design dat donk. Well, assisted. And as far as the Ferrari/Dino thing goes, wanna step outside & discuss it further? Remember, youngster, I was a (spectacularly unsuccessful) Ferrari salesman in those heady days.

*puts tail between legs and flees.... Hehe, did you ever sell a Dino? What's the nicest car you sold back then? If you say a Fiat X-19 then we are no longer friends...

I worked there in 72, 73, 74, 75. It was a Volvo, Porsche & Ferrari dealer. Sydney's only Porsche & Ferrari dealer at the time, and for a while the biggest Volvo dealer outside Sweden. Being a gormless 19/20 year old at the time, I certainly wouldn't have bought a Porsche or Ferrari from me. Sold quite a few of those sensible boxes though. One of my tasks was to drive the Ferraris & Porsches to the motor registry to register them. I always found interesting routes from Lindfield to North Sydney. Looking back from this lofty viewpoint, I was really lucky not to bend one. Didn't really know how to drive then (Oversteer? Say what?), but still did stupid things in 2.7 RSs, 365 Boxers, Dinos, 3 litre turbos. On one memorable occasion I got to drive the 250LM that Ralph Lauren now owns. Chassis 6321 for all the anoraks out there. Its original owner was the Chairman Of The Board of the dealership. Was a great place for a budding petrolhead to work, we ran a team of early 911 racers and a 330P4, surely the most voluptuous car ever. I was spoilt back then. Could be why the 458 et al leave me cold now. I remember real Ferraris.

Should have mentioned, the LM was raced here by a certain J Y Stewart and Graham Hill. They move in exalted company. Y'know, cos I drove the car too. Ah, doesn't matter.

I literally turned green reading all of this! Man, that is a dream job for anyone, let alone a 19 year old! And a 250LM?! That must have been unbelievable. Long live the days before Manettinos and computer controlled transmissions!

Yeah, it was pretty special. I sat in the LM for a while after the drive just listening to the motor cool down. I clearly remember the sounds of the motor : the cam chains, the carbies sucking, the gears whining...wonderful! Heavy brakes and steering at suburban speeds. Sydney roads do not equate to Le Mans. I believe that Ralph paid 6 million bucks for it.
