Caterham Seven - 2

Album details

Capture Date: Aug. 13, 2010
City: England (UK), Tunbridge Wells

This was sitting outside my office today. This one apparently has a Vauxhall engine of 1800cc - I love the twin chromed K&Ns poking out the side of the bonnet. They were, of course, originally Lotus Sevens designed in 1957, until the rights were sold to Caterham Cars Ltd in 1973. I live about 25 miles from the Caterham factory (and my girlfriend actually grew up in the village of Caterham) so they're quite a common sight around these parts. Here's a question - which is the better Chapman design, the Seven or the Elan? Discuss.

Hmmmm, they're both Lotii, but still quite different to each other. It's not possible to choose. It's like trying to choose your favourite Beatles song.

The raw performance of the seven is a classic old school ''seat of the pants'' ride.

I've never driven one on the road, but I'd love to. I had a quick couple of laps in an R300 on the short Indy Circuit at Brand's Hatch a couple of summers ago - it made the rented Exige S I'd just driven feel a bit slow and portly! Just before the trackday finished at 5pm, I unwittingly took up an offer of a pax lap from a chap with what I thought was a Westfield of some kind. Not one of my sanest decisions - it was in fact a DAX with a turbo Hayabusa engine and something like 340 bhp. By quite some margin the fastest thing I've ever been in - seemed like every gear only lasted about a second before the redline. I can't remember the guy's name now, I just refer to him as 'that grinning lunatic'...

That must have been such a blast. We have the 'Busa engined Radicals here and they are amazing, so fast through the corners.
