Audi R8 LMS in Sydney - 4

Album details

Capture Date: May. 30, 2010
City: Sydney Australia
Event: Eastern Creek race meeting

This R8 LMS was racing at Sydney's Eastern Creek racetrack today, as part of the Australian GT Championship. The track commentator said that it's the only R8 LMS outside Europe & the US. It looks great, and sounds even better. Wikipedia says that only 10 have been built. This was a two race day meeting, with many support races involving Radicals, MX-5s, locally built Lotus 7 replicas, production sports cars etc. And admission was free. Outstanding!

Wow, this must have been a pretty sick experience OS. As if you got to see the only R8 LMS outside of Europe and the US! Free admission eh? Were there lots of people?

Not really. I knew the meeting was on, but I didn't realise until I got there that is was free admission. Unfortunately these meetings don't pull a big crowd, despite the fantastic racing and the variety of cars running. There's no publicity in the media so only the diehards know it's on. Maybe they don't have the budget for marketing. Down here the big crowd puller is the V8 Supercars series, which is just for Commodores and Falcons. I don't follow it at all, I find it tedious. But the upside of the Australian GT Championship having smaller crowds is that you can wander around the paddock and get a close look at the cars and take photos without having to wait for a gap in the crowd. It also allows you to get right to the trackside fence and take shots and really feel the cars thunder past.

I'm sure that if I'd asked I could have sat in the cars. The teams are very co-operative about that sort of thing. The mechanics will stand back & let you get right in to engine bays or wheel arches or whatever to get photos.
