Lovely old 1968 Porsche 911T

Back in the day, before the Carrera badge was devalued by being slapped on the back of every 911, there was a range of 911s. You could choose between, in ascending order, a 911T, 911E or 911S. This beautiful 911T is now 42 years old, and has certainly aged gracefully. It has a 2 litre flat 6, running 2 triple choke Weber carbies. It's a real delight to drive, having the true sports car attributes of no power steering, no power brakes, 3 pedals, very light weight and a truly fantastic sound. The steering has a directness that cars just don't...

This replicates the 1973 2.8 litre 911RSR racer. The 1973 RSR was the first 911 to wear what would become the iconic turbo flares. The 1973 2.7 RS road car had the ducktail to homologate it for use in racing on the RSR.

This pristine targa was parked in Cannery Row, Monterey as I wandered past. It's a 1967 911S soft window targa. The first series of targas had a zip-out plastic rear window, so you could drive roof on & window in, roof on & window out, roof off and window off, roof off & window in.....and so on. This was the top of the line Porsche of its day. It would have been extremely desirable and quite expensive.I had a quick chat with the owner. He'd driven down from Oregon with the wife, and 2 little kids in the back, as it...

911ST replica

One of the lesser known 911 models is the 1970 911 S/T. Based on the 911S, but with a 2.5 litre engine usually giving around 240BHP, it is regarded as the predecessor to the 2.7 Carrera RS. The S/T had larger guard flares than than the Carrera, but not quite as big as the RSR. They also often ran miniltes on the rear, as does this car. This replica is accurate down to having plastic front & rear lids, plastic windows with no winding mechanism, buckets, cage and many other features. Note the external hinges on the engine lid.

Supercharged Early 911

Porsche is well-known for their turbocharged cars, both road and race, lesser-known for their use of turbos in aviation engines. Supercharging is not so much associated with Porsche. This early model 911 runs a 3 litre engine with a supercharger. It was built by a member of the Porsche Club of New South Wales, Australia. Many of the components were fabricated by the owner/builder for this car, simply because it had never been done before. It is regularly raced at Club events and is as quick as the GT3s. The '911K' badging refers to "Kompressor", the German word for supercharger. A...

Unique 1974 Porsche 911RS

In 1974, Porsche made only 54 3 litre Carrera RS's. Of the half dozen built in RHD, this is the only one not built to UK specifications. It was built to Australian specs, was delivered new to the then Australian distributor as his personal car and is still here in Australia. It has the 230bhp engine, which may not sound like much, but a weight of only 900 kilos gives it quite enough performance. The 3 litre RS is one of the most sought-after of all 911s. I took these shots back in the days when I only had a 2MP...
