1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K in Melbourne - 6

Album details

Capture Date: Sep. 15, 2008
City: Melbourne Australia
Event: Art Gallery
I went to Melbourne a couple of years ago for the Art Deco exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. I had to get special permission to take these photos as photography was not permitted. What an incredibly elegant way to get around. Just imagine pulling up to an event in this in 1936. The Veyron of its day? Probably. However, I do wonder what it would be like to drive. Even I'm not old enough to have a road test of these when they were new. Would they be a bit truck-like? After all, 2.35 tonnes...... Did they have power steering? I wondered the same thing about the Duesenbergs that I saw at Monterey last year. http://www.madwhips.com/1930-duesenberg-j/ Anyone out there older than me who can answer these pressing questions?

Stunning, just stunning. 180 hp wasn't shy for 1936 eh? Considerably more expensive than that peasants' runabout the Veyron, both today and when it was new.
